Diving into the new year
The new year started with a dive in the sea. The only ones mad enough to do it where the Dutch and one Canadian. The water wasn’t actually that cold and we all survived ...
After that came Burns Night to celebrate the Scottish poet Robert Burns. A poem was recited, we ate haggis and other Scottish or Scottish looking dishes and some danced on Scottish music. It was a fun night and we weren’t too concerned that there was not one proper Scotsman to be found at the party.
Then the Aussies organized a beach volleyball event on a Sunday afternoon on the –yes – beach. That was also great fun; the ball was light enough not to hurt your wrists but maybe a bit on the light side for the strong westerly wind. This made it quite a challenge to keep the ball in the field, but was great exercise for the ones who had to run all the way to the water line to retrieve the ball.
In between the socializing we actually did some work as well; Making the guard rails and solar panels that hang on the sides sturdier by replacing part of the guard rails with stainless steel, finishing the cover for the new dinghy, sewing cockpit bags for the halyards and sheets, polishing Issy’s hull….
Another project finished was the new red ensign, so we thought it a nice idea to invite some people and officially hoist the flag while drinking prosecco and singing ‘What shall we do with a drunken sailor’. The afternoon event turned into a late night party, so we were glad that most people on our pontoon are not on board and the ones who are were invited.
